It's a boy....

but we didn't get a clean bill of health for our little boy today. We went to our ultrasound this morning and were told my doctor would discuss the results with us then. I knew it was not good because the last I spoke to her, she said that I should hear from her within a week of the ultrasound. She then begged and pleaded with the perinatologist's office to get me in same day with their tech, the genetic counselor and perinatologist.

Both techs found that the lateral ventricals were enlarged in his brain. The normal range is 10mm and his were 12 and 13mm. This in itself could just be natural variation, however, it can cause pressure on the brain and thus cause some brain damage. Depending on who you talk to, the enlargement is between mild and moderate.

Next, he had an echogenic bowel, which basically means that his bowels look very dense. They light up like the color of bones on the ultrasound. They said this will not affect the functioning of the bowel, but could be a marker for a chromosomal problem.

Each of these problems on their own really wouldn't cause too much concern, but the fact that they are showing at the same time causes more concern. We did an amniocentesis today to rule out Down's syndrom, trisomy 13 and trisomy 18 and a few other chromosomal problems.

I will be going in for a fetal MRI sometime next week (hopefully). This little guy was also being stubborn and would not give good views of his heart, so they will have us do a fetal echocardiogram as well instead of having us come back in until he finally decides to cooperate.

The amnio test results should be back in 7-10 days and we'll have a clearer picture at that point. From what the perinatologist said, if there's a problem, it's probably chromosomal, not caused by an infection although we tested for that today too. Or, it could be some weird thing and he turns out find in the end.

Ugh....

  6. Thanks everyone! I'm getting lots of stories from other families who have gotten less than good news and everything has turned out well in the end. I'm just going hope that we are a part of that group too. I can't wait until he gets here so I can tell him how much we love him and how grateful we are to have him!
